WINTER RUNNING SAFETY TIPS

Keeping San Dom's runners safe is everyone’s responsibility! If you're  heading out for a club run or training another day of the week this winter, please keep these friendly safety reminders in mind.

1 / Be Seen, Be Safe

  • Wear hi-viz and reflective gear whenever visibility is poor or it’s dark. Think bright jackets, flashing armbands, or reflective vests.

  • Head torches or clip-on lights help you see and be seen especially on unlit or poorly lit roads or trails.

  • Avoid all-black running outfits: cars and cyclists (plus other runners!) may not spot you until it’s too late.

2 / Look Out for Each Other

  • Buddy up! Running with a partner or small group helps if someone gets injured or feels unwell.

  • Keep an eye on new members: help them stay with someone and learn the route.

  • Never leave the last runner behind. Adjust your pace or loop back to keep runners together.

3 / Communicate

  • Tell someone your plans ie. where you’re running and when you expect to be back.

  • If you’re turning back early or not returning to the starting point, let someone know.

  • Share any medical needs or injuries before setting off, and carry your medication (e.g. inhaler, EpiPen).

4/ Be Weather Wise

  • Check the forecast before setting out: ice, snow, or high winds can make routes unsafe, especially on many of our courses where tree branches, tree roots and a build up of leaves are quite often the norm.

  • Choose safer, well-lit routes when conditions are poor.

  • Don’t be afraid to adapt or cancel if the weather looks too risky – there’s always another run and that treadmill may suddenly become more inviting!

5 / Smart Choices for Women & Solo Runners

  • Stick to busier, well-lit routes rather than quiet backroads or parks after dark.

  • Share your live location (e.g. on WhatsApp) with a friend, fellow club runner or family member.

  • Avoid headphones or keep the volume low so you’re aware of your surroundings.

  • Trust your instincts and if something doesn’t feel right, change direction or head back to a safe place.

  • Take a look at the Welsh Athletics 'Own the Night/Championing Women's Running & Safety Across Wales' initiative for further support. Full details here

6 / Personal Responsibility

  • Ultimately, you’re in charge of your own safety.

  • Know your limits, listen to your body, and make smart decisions on every run.

  • The club is here to support you in every way but if ever in doubt, speak to one of our committee members about concerns you may have, we're hear to help!

And finally...

  • Always keep an eye out for your fellow runners who may or may not be with a club who might be in need of a helping hand when you head out. A bit of kindness and support goes a long way in the lovely running community!
