May highlights

The races were starting to come in fast and furious this month! Due to sooo much happening in May, we've cherry picked a few on the blog. Congrats everyone who's recorded PB's, special achievements and your own personal milestones! For the complete weekly breakdown, head over to our facebook account!

Kicking off with..wins, welsh accolades and more!

First off, well done to Susannah and Tony who represented Wales at the England V Wales Masters 5K in Shrewsbury.

Tony was fifth in his age category whilst Susannah was 7th in hers. The pair ran 5 loops of the same bit of track, both enjoyed their experience and did the club proud.

Also James H, Andy G and Susannah who represented South East Wales at the Caerphilly 10k and inter regional team championships. The men's team grabbed a fantastic team victory for the region in a hard-fought battle to the line whilst Susannah won the FV45 age category.

James and Andy continued with a storming month:

James H won the Treforest 10k followed by Andy G in 3rd and Chris O in 6th. The guys worked together with 3 others from Pontypridd Roadents, Penarth & Dinas & Islwyn for the first half before the group spread out slightly. As a result, the 3 men finished as overall team winners.

Chris O was first V40 home followed by Matt T for 2nd due to a sign up issue for Ponty’s Gethin.

Delyth finished in fifth overall and was first V35.

Huw D, fresh from his midweek 5k PB, had shoelace issues but came away with a PB like Bru & Ryan.

A further 8 managed either a season’s best for 10k or a course record. Arthur came away with bronze for the V70 category too!

And in the first Rose Inn..Tuesday evening was the first of the Rose Inn four mile races with a decent turnout of nine in humid conditions in Redwick.

Neil W was first home in the top 20 followed by Hywel a few places later. Susannah & Delyth finished within a second of each other in 5th and 6th respectively. Susannah was first in her age category and Del was second with a new PB.

Meg ran a PB for 12th lady and Rich Hazell made a return to racing to finish comfortably within 30 minutes.

Craig & Ron finished together with Craig dipping over the line first. Ron was also first in the V75+ age category and would’ve also been 3rd V70 if he was included in those results.

Niall rounded off the team about twenty seconds behind the other two adding to his race tally for the year.

Dan Rees was showing the rest of the club how to do it at the Llanelli Sprint Tri, coming out of the water alongside some of the elite men, getting 1st place in the U16 category and an equally amazing 3rd overall for the U20s!

The Whitchurch 5k and other races..

A fantastic turnout from the club with over 30 running with extras around the course supporting.

After a manic start which saw James Hansell & Chris Oxley both fall over in the first few seconds, along with a few others - one who notably broke his elbow - the runners set off towards Kelston Road.

A fair bit of congestion was noted by the majority of those running before it opened up near the mile mark by the Railway Inn.

James H was home first in 15:48, with Chris behind in 16:17, both recording a new PB - most likely helped by a dump of adrenaline at the start! PBs were raining down with further ones for James Salter, Jack, Dan R, Hywel, Ryan, Ian D, Delyth, Bru, Tony, Tom B and Renée with season’s bests for 5k for a further eleven!

Some of the team met up at the pub afterwards to celebrate the performances on the night and to discuss how that impacts their future handicap race time.

James Salter running a track race in Cornwall called the Dan Roster 5000m. He finished first in 16.23.

In the Croups Spring 10, Sara and Jack both came away with podium places. Jack finished third in 59 minutes with Sara taking second lady in 1:12.

San Domenico Adventures!

Dave B, “fresh” from his recent 70.3 race in Jesolo, near Venice, decided to do the Eryri 25k UTMB series race. With some incredible scenery in the mountains and blue sky all around, Dave finished 33rd overall and 3rd in his age group.

Simon C completed the Outlaw Half Nottingham (a half Ironman distance triathlon) in 5:29; a course PB for him. A 36 minute swim was followed by a chilly bike of 2:52, before a 1:52 half marathon. He thinks he very much deserved his ‘PB treat’ of a new pair of shades!

In Riga  Andrew U took on the marathon and Joey downgraded to the 10k having been in a sling for a while following a bad fall at the end of March.

Andrew finished in 4:10 to get his fastest marathon in a while. Joey ran an impressive 55mins despite his injury.
